The research group Limnology at Ghent University studies freshwater ecosystems of temperate and tropical regions with emphasis on the taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, and ecology of lake zooplankton and zoobenthos; and on the long-term dynamics of aquatic communities and ecosystems under the influence of natural climate variability and human impact. Its research focus comprises both fundamental aspects of biological diversity, community ecology, and ecosystem dynamics as well as more applied topics in the context of global climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem conservation. The research group Limnology organises short and long programmes of post-graduate education on issues of biodiversity conservation and global change.
