Abstract
    In The Netherlands experience with sand nourishment as a measure to repair beaches and dunes after coastal erosion and to reinforce weak dune belts has been acquired for about 25 years. In 1990 a new coastal policy was introduced, in which sand nourishment is the major means to control coastal erosion. The national government has undertaken the task to bring the structural coastal erosion to a halt. The coastline of 1990, called the basal coastline, is the standard in this. As no structural erosion is allowed anymore, but the natural behaviour of the coastal area is to remain as well as possible, this is called Dynamic Preservation. In this report the coastal management is evaluated from a morphological approach. It appears that the coastal retreat can be stopped with sand nourishments, though there is some concern about the sustainability of the method in the case of very steep underwater slopes. The sand balance of the erosion areas has been balanced. The space needed for the various coastal functions is being guaranteed with sand nourishment. The safety against flooding of the polders and objects in the dunes is not decreasing anymore. No dune area is being lost and the recreational beaches are becoming larger. To work more economical and to work more with nature sand has been supplied to the (underwater) shore face as much as possible in the last few years. This period of experience is still too short for an evaluation, but the results are encouraging.
