Taxonomic remark Timm (2007) denies the paternity of Aulophorus furcatus to Müller (1773) on the pretext that this species cannot be found in Müller's book referred to in Sperber (1948), i.e. Müller (1773: 23). In fact, Müller's book is in two volumes ("Voluminis primi" and "Voluminis alterum"). The first volume consists of two parts, "Pars prima", published in 1773, and "Pars Altera", published in 1774. This subtlety may go unnoticed if one does not take the care to go through the whole work. It is probably for this reason that a confusion was created by Sperber (1948) when she attributed many original combinations of Naidinae species to Müller (1773) instead of 1774. The reference to Aulophorus furcatus is made in the second part of the first volume. Müller (1774: 23) makes an explicit reference to Rösel (1755), who was the first to describe this species under the name "Das geschmeidige Wasserschlänglien mit zwey Gablspitzen": "... et in furcata Roes. ins. 3. t. 93. f. 8-16. oculi desint, digitatam potius dico". Interestingly, however, although Müller attributes a Latin name to the species reported by Rösel, he seems to put it directly in synonymy with "Nais digitata".
Later, Timm (pers. comm.) admitted that he was not able to consult all Müller's volumes (1773 and 1774). [details]
