The production of algae in the Patuxent River estuary (Maryland, USA) was much less than the carbon requirements of a population of the calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis. Detrital carbon was present in quantities that suggest turnover times of 8 to 83 days for this pool, assuming that all algal production was consumed by E. affinis. We hypothesize that E. affinis must consume detritus to meet a part of its requirements for energy.
