THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS REPORT HAS BEEN THE STUDY OF THE GAMETOGENESIS OF ACANTHOCYCLOPS ROBUSTUS G.O. SARS, A SPECIES BELONGING TO A LITTLE-KNOWN GROUP OF CRUSTACEANS (COPEPODA, CYCLOPOIDA), WITH EMPHASIS ON STRUCTURAL, AS WELL AS HISTOCHEMICAL, AND SECONDARILY, SOME BIOCHEMICAL AND FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS. THE TECHNIQUES USED HAVE BEEN THE USUAL ONES FOR TRANSMISSION OBSERVATION, WITH OTHERS HAVING BEEN OPTIMIZED, SUCH AS TANNIC ACID FIXATION, TO ENHANCE CONTRAST AND AS AN INDIRECT INDICATOR OF CELL VIABILITY; A histochemical technique based on phosphotungstic acid was also developed for the selective contrast of certain basic glycoprotein groups. Finally, within the technical section, a high-resolution electrophoretic technique (10-12 g of protein per band) was standardized. Different quantitative parameters of the mitochondrial and vesicular compartments of oocytes were monitored using stereological techniques throughout oogenesis. This has provided some previously unpublished data on this process, and specifically on vitellogenesis. A histochemical study was carried out on both the different synthetic products that make up the yolk, establishing its origin and an approximation to its nature, as well as on the different components involved in the formation of the spermatophore, an essential element for the transmission of male sexual products. Likewise, some morphological and functional aspects related to the male genitive tract were defined, especially the glandular nature of the vas deferens.
