Polychaete identification on a routine basis has long been regarded as a chore by benthic ecologists whose main interests are not the taxonomy of the group. However, with the increasing need for the routine fauna! identification of benthic samples occasioned by the rising concern for the environmental health of the sea bed, both inshore and offshore, the lack of suitable works on the identification of polychaetes from British waters has become painfully apparent. Although various keys in English have· been produced from time to time, usually without illustration, the most widely used and authorative general works relevant to the nor!h eastern Atlantic remain Fauvels' Polychaeta volumes in the Faune de France series produced earlier this century (in French) and Hartmann-Schroder's Borstenwurmer volume in the Die Tienvelt series (in German). This translation of the keys from Hartmann-Schroder's book was inspired by one workers' frustration (M.R.) at not being able to get the best out of the only recent comprehensive work on North Sea Polychaeta. The translation was undertaken by Maggie Ingold of the Languages Department of Heriot-Watt University, working closely with Martin Riddle who provided the technical interpretation. The format of the key follows that of the original almost exactly. It is intended that the translation is used in close conjunction with the original publication referring directly to figures and descriptions where appropriate. Page numbers without parentheses refer to pages elsewhere in the translation, those with parentheses refer to pages or figures in the original publication. Only those genera requiring further keying are given headings, for single species genera the reader must refer directly to the original work. It is hoped that the publication of this translation will enable more widespread use of Dr Hartmann-Schroder's work and that those who already possess a copy will be able to get fuller benefit from it.
