Taxonomy Genus Asplanchna was divided in two subgenera by Sudzuki (1964) [Ref.360288] based on different shapes of the vitellarium (spherical in Asplanchna s.str. and horseshoe-shaped in Asplanchnella), but an intermediate shape of the vitellarium exists in A. tropica Koste & Tobias (vide Jose de Paggi (2002) [Ref.361661]).
