| Abstract |
In 1970 the Belgian Government set up a national Environment / Water research programme (North Sea Research Programme) under the influence of the European Economic Community. The "Project Sea" (Projet Mer / Projekt Zee), funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office, was the first phase (1970-1976) of this programme and its purpose was to assess the quality of the marine environment or "assemble a reliable scientific basis and develop modelling techniques to permit both qualitative and quantitative simulation of the impact of natural phenomena or anthropic effects".
For 5 years samples were collected at different stations in the Belgian Continental Shelf (BCS) using different types of instruments. "Project Sea" had also a multi-and interdisciplinary character: more than 200 scientists with different expertise (biology, geology, chemistry, physics,...) worked on this project. A vast collection of parameters have been monitored in water, sediment and biota: physical (temperature, salinity), chemical (nutrients, heavy metals, pesticides), biological (fish, benthos, zooplankton, phytoplankton: taxonomy and counts, production), hydrological, meteorological, microbiological,...
