Abstract:
Het laboratoire d’écologie des Systèmes Aquatiques (ESA) van de Université Libre de Bruxelles bestudeert en modelleert de structuur en het functioneren van aquatische systemen alsook hun respons op natuurlijke en antropogene veranderingen. Daarbij worden veldobservaties, laboratoriumexperimenten en numerieke experimenten gecombineerd. ESA participeert in nationale en Europese projecten met betrekking tot geavanceerde modellering en onderzoek naar eutrofiëring en heeft expertise in de optische afstandsdetectie van substanties in kustwateren.

In het algemeen doet ESA onderzoek naar de rol van de oceanen als buffer in de globale klimaatsverandering, aquatische microbiële ecologie, eutrofiëring van kustwateren en toxische algenbloeien, voornamelijk Phaeocystis.
